Aspirus Health is organizing a free community event aimed at helping people manage stress and build emotional self-awareness. The program will be led by Jim Swan, APNP, a Behavioral Health Specialist at Aspirus Portage Clinic. The session is intended to provide attendees with tools to recognize and address internal signals before stress becomes overwhelming.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, about one in five adults in the United States faces mental illness each year. Despite this high prevalence, many people are reluctant to seek help due to stigma or uncertainty. Developing emotional self-awareness can play an important role in improving mental well-being by helping individuals understand how their emotions affect daily life and learn healthy coping methods.

“This discussion will cover key topics including the definition of stress, the difference between stress and anxiety, physical and psychological symptoms of stress, and practical coping mechanisms that can be used in everyday life,” said Swan.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2025, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Aspirus Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. Those interested are asked to register in advance by calling 608.745.3868 during business hours.
