Site preparation and fencing installation began in June, marking the initial phase of construction for a $31.1 million project at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. The official start of on-site work was celebrated by Miron Construction, HGA Architects, and leaders from Aspirus Health.
Aspirus is focusing on enhancing healthcare services in the Upper Peninsula. As demand for quality care increases, the organization aims to expand services and resources to better support the community.
“This 1920s building has proudly served our community for more than a century, but it’s time to take the next step,” said Natalie Seaber, President – Michigan Region. “Bringing all services under one roof allows us to modernize our facility, elevate the patient experience, and ensure we’re ready to meet the evolving healthcare needs of today and the future.”
The expansion includes a 28,000 square foot addition that will relocate all current services from the original 1920s-era building into a new state-of-the-art facility. The redesign will include updated inpatient rooms and centrally localized imaging, lab, and pharmacy services.
“We’re excited to enhance and expand local care while also supporting the growth of the local economy,” said Melanee Tiura, Chief Administrative Officer for Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. “While the existing hospital has served our community for many years, it became clear that to meet the increasing needs of our patients, we needed to build a larger, more modern facility with expanded services and greater capacity.”
The project is expected to be completed by March 2027.
