For the twelfth consecutive year, Becky Bean, a registered nurse at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, will participate in the CopperDog sled dog race from February 27 to March 1 in Calumet, Michigan.
Bean works in both the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. She notes that her experiences as a nurse help her on the trail. Skills such as teamwork, endurance, decision-making, and trust are important in both nursing and mushing.
The CopperDog event includes several races: the CopperDog 120 covers 122 miles and is considered the most challenging; the CopperDog 30 is a shorter run from Calumet to Eagle Harbor; and the CopperDog 15 is designed for developing teams. This year, Bean will compete in the longest race, the CopperDog 120.
“This race means something special to me every single year,” said Bean. “Twelve years in, I still feel that same excitement at the starting line. Nursing has taught me to stay calm, think clearly, and trust my team—both human and canine. Out on the trail, just like in the hospital, you have to assess constantly, adapt quickly, and support those who depend on you.”
Bean has become a well-known figure within the CopperDog community over her years of participation. She attributes her resilience and preparation skills to her work in health care.
“Becky truly reflects the spirit of Aspirus,” said Jenn Jenich-Laplander, Communications & Engagement Coordinator. “For 12 consecutive years, she has shown unwavering dedication to her patients and to the sport she loves. Her resilience, teamwork, and compassion exemplify both the determination behind CopperDog and our commitment to caring for the communities we serve.”
Aspirus supports events like CopperDog through volunteering, planning efforts, sponsorships, and direct participation by staff members.
“We are honored to stand behind this incredible community tradition,” added Jenich-Laplander. “Events like CopperDog showcase the resilience and connection that define the Keweenaw. We are proud to cheer on Becky and all the athletes taking on this year’s race.”
