Tom Tiffany, a representative from Wisconsin, said that the United States should maintain full control over its public health policy. He expressed gratitude towards the Trump administration for rejecting the World Health Organization (WHO) pandemic treaty. This statement was made on X.

“America’s public health policy belongs to the American people,” said Tiffany. “It should never be dictated by globalists at the World Health Org or the United Nations. I’m grateful the Trump admin has rejected the WHO’s pandemic treaty and is putting American sovereignty first.”

Debates surrounding the proposed WHO pandemic treaty and updates to the International Health Regulations have stirred controversy in the United States. According to The Wall Street Journal, lawmakers have warned that such agreements could potentially limit national sovereignty during public health emergencies. While supporters argue these agreements would enhance global pandemic response, critics in Congress express concerns about relinquishing decision-making power to international entities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. public health policy during the COVID-19 pandemic included over 100 international research collaborations and $3 billion in funding for global response efforts. This reflects an ongoing balance between domestic priorities and international cooperation.

A 2024 survey by Pew Research Center found that 52% of Americans view the WHO favorably, while 38% remain skeptical. Public opinion on both the WHO and United Nations is divided along partisan lines, influenced by ongoing debates about sovereignty and effectiveness.

Tiffany, a Republican congressman from Wisconsin’s 7th District with experience in state government and business, is known for his criticism of ceding U.S. authority to international organizations. He prioritizes domestic decision-making in public health policy.
