In May 2025, tensions arose between federal authorities and Democratic lawmakers when Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers detained a staffer from Representative Jerry Nadler’s office during a security sweep at a building shared with an immigration court. According to Politico, the incident followed protests against an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest and included accusations from one officer that Nadler’s team was “harboring rioters,” although DHS’s official statement did not include this claim. The staffer was released without charges, bringing attention to the growing friction over immigration enforcement.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s fiscal year 2024 annual report, ICE arrested 81,312 noncitizens with criminal histories who collectively had over 516,000 charges and convictions. These included 57,081 assaults, 18,579 sex offenses, 12,895 weapons charges, and 2,894 homicide-related crimes. ICE said these arrests prioritized individuals posing risks to national security and public safety.
Since 1986, the U.S. government has prosecuted 1,444 individuals for threatening a current or former president or others in the line of succession. Data compiled by Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse and reported by WHYY indicate that the peak year was 1987 during President Reagan’s term with 73 prosecutions. These figures underscore persistent security concerns surrounding top federal officials.
Van Orden is a Republican member of Congress representing Wisconsin’s 3rd District since 2023.
