The Sun Prairie Area School District Board of Education advanced a proclamation on May 4 officially recognizing May as Jewish American Heritage Month at its regular meeting held on April 27.

The recognition aims to honor the diverse cultures within the school community and ensure that all students feel acknowledged. Dr. Michael Morgan, director of equity and systemic inclusion for the district, said, “This action reflects the Board’s commitment to honoring the diverse cultures that make up our community and ensuring all students feel seen, valued, and respected.”

Jewish American Heritage Month was first proclaimed nationally in 2006 by President George W. Bush after bipartisan support led by Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Senator Arlen Specter. The month commemorates more than 370 years of Jewish American history dating back to 1654 when the first Jewish settlers arrived in New Amsterdam, now known as New York City. The United States has served as a refuge for many Jews fleeing persecution between 1933 and 1952 despite significant immigration barriers.

Dr. Morgan said that celebrating this month provides an opportunity to recognize the culture, resilience, and impact of Jewish Americans in society as well as within Sun Prairie schools: “Through this proclamation, the Board encourages staff, students, families, and community members to take time this May to learn, reflect, and celebrate.”

Board member Bryn Horton noted during the meeting that it had been some time since a proclamation was last approved by the board. Horton explained she drafted the document with input from Dr. Morgan and local community members.

Morgan also said that over five years ago only one event was recognized annually by SPASD; now there are nine heritage months observed each year. He said these recognitions help foster understanding among Sun Prairie’s diverse population about why heritage months matter.

Community members can visit the Systemic Equity and Inclusion page on the district website for more information about events recognized throughout the year.
