Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers is beaming with the pride in anticipation for the start of the Paralympic Games.
“Best of luck to all Badgers athletes competing in the Paralympics,” Evers recently posted on Twitter. “We’re rooting for you.”
In all, seven natives of the state are set to compete, including three University of Wisconsin alums. With the Games kicking off on Aug. 24 and running for 12 days, 2016 wheelchair basketball gold medalist Jake Williams of Milwaukee and Nate Hinze of Cedar Grove are set to defend their crown.
Other hometown favorites set for action are John Boie of Milton (wheelchair basketball), Lisa Coryell of La Crosse (compound archery), Hailey Danz of Wauwatosa (paratriathlon), Joe Delagrave of Prairie du Chien (wheelchair rugby) and Matt Lesperance of Coleman (wheelchair basketball).
Heading the list of those who studied and trained in Wisconsin are 15-year-old Keegan Scott of Illinois (swimming) and wheelchair basketball stars Mark Scott of Michigan and Lindsey Zurbrugg of Oregon.
For Scott, this year’s Games mark his fifth straight appearance. The University of UW-Whitewater grad has previously won a gold and bronze medal over his career.
