Fort McCoy in Wisconsin has become a temporary home for some Afghan refugees after the recent take over by the Taliban.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers welcomed the refugees to the state in an effort to keep them and their families safe.
"As we continue to learn more information about Afghan refugee reception efforts at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin is ready to assist these efforts and help these individuals who served our country and are now seeking refuge," Evers tweeted on Aug. 17.
A group of special immigrant visa applicants and their families were settled in Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, with other portions of the group of refugees located in Virginia and Texas.
The governor said his state is excited to welcome the refugees to their temporary home after their years of devotion to protecting American soldiers. He also warned citizens that local veterans could be facing difficult times as a result of the current circumstances.
The timetables and the exact number of refugees being brought in and resettled are unclear, however, 1,000 service members have been called in to aid in these efforts.
Additional refugees were expected to arrive in Fort McCoy in the days following the initial arrivals. During their stay, refugees will receive housing, transportation and medical care.
