Diesel Student Wins on National Stage

Fox

Fox Valley Technical College recently issued the following announcement.

Life-changing. That’s how Mike Scepanski, a soon-to-be graduate of the Diesel Equipment Technology program, describes how it felt to compete—and win—in the 2021 SkillsUSA competition.

“It was a great test of my knowledge,” he says. “To be able to win this competition is life-changing for me. I was able to get a career-boosting job I didn't think was possible coming out of school.”

Mike competed in the Diesel Equipment Technology category, in both the Wisconsin and national stages. He took home a first-place award in Wisconsin, and in June 2021, he placed second at the national competition, which was held virtually.

“The online format made it more challenging, especially on the engine troubleshooting station,” he says. He competed in several stations on a variety of topics pertaining to heavy duty diesel trucks, including brakes, hydraulics, electricity, transmissions, driveline, troubleshooting issues on a six-cylinder diesel engine, and a Department of Transportation vehicle inspection. He also participated in a job interview station.

Mike will complete his studies this fall and has already lined up a great job as a mechanic with the Outagamie County Highway Department.

“I’m very proud of this outcome, but I know it wouldn't have been possible without the help and support of everyone in the Diesel Equipment Technology department,” he says. “Join SkillsUSA or any club for that matter. You never know how much of an impact it could have on your life!"
