Gov. Tony Evers and other Wisconsin Democrats have reversed their positioning on a business property tax to draft their own last week following disagreements between Democrats and Republicans.
Originally drafted by state Republicans two months ago, the Republican-controlled legislature passed a bill to repeal a property tax on businesses, which was swiftly vetoed by Evers. Now, the Democratic governor and other state Democrats have drafted their own proposal on the same issue with the same stance, according to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
"This legislation will continue our efforts to support businesses and families as they bounce back from the pandemic while ensuring our local governments have the aid they need to remain whole," Evers said to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The new repeal bill, co-authored by Democrats Rep. Robyn Vining and Sen. Brad Pfaff, was approved by the governor despite vetoing the first bill proposed by the Republican Legislature, who have called the move hypocritical, according to the Wheeler Report.
Evers' reasons that the Democrat-written bill is better than the original proposal written by Republicans due to the way it accounts for inflation. He also believes that the former of the two bills was drafted in a "haphazard" fashion, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
