Public Notice - No Snow Deposited into Streets

Notice

City of Lake Mills issued the following announcement on November 16.

Lake Mills’ residents are reminded that snow from their driveways or sidewalks must not be deposited into city streets.

Additionally, snow must not be plowed across any street from a driveway to the opposite side of the street.

There are several very important reasons for not depositing snow in the street:

1) Snow deposited into the street after the street has been plowed becomes hard packed and creates a rough area that can be distracting and/or hazardous for drivers.

2) These hard-packed areas tend to remain as ice after other portions of the street have thawed making this area dangerous to traffic.

3) The City has a policy to clear streets from curb-to-curb to help maintain lane width through the winter, and to better accommodate water flowing off the street when the snow melts.  Areas where snow has been deposited in the street tends to narrow the street width and block water flow when the snow melts.

Snow is deposited in driveways as a result of normal plowing operations; this is an unfortunate aspect of winter in Wisconsin. Plows are typically angled to the right to move snow from the center of the street to the curb.  For this reason, a certain amount of snow will be deposited in driveways.

Depositing the snow into the street is not allowed for any reason. Violation of this city ordinance (Lake Mills City Code, Section 573-19, Obstruction and Encroachments, paragraph E) can result in a $25 to $100 fine.

It is the responsibility of residents to place all snow either on the tree lawn or elsewhere on their property.

Residents are also reminded they are responsible for the work of any contractors that may be hired or asked to remove snow from their property.
