Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) has lent her voice in support for the Build Back Better Act, which has to wait until next year to pass in the Senate.
Baldwin took to Twitter to say that the act will help cultivate jobs, provide tax cuts and lower health care costs.
“I won’t let 51 Senators stop me from continuing my work to extend tax cuts, create jobs and lower the cost of child care, health care, home health care and prescription drugs. I stand on the side of Wisconsin working families and delivering results for them. #BuildBackBetter,” she wrote.
Fox News reports that the $2 trillion bill is being hindered by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) who has been called out by his counterparts for not supporting the legislation with White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki saying Manchin is reneging “his commitments” to the party. Manchin has stated that the provision is an “inflation-fighting package.”
President of the New Tolerance initiative Gregory Angelo tweeted that there are other members of the Democratic party that do not believe in the proposed act.
“Privately Sen. Sinema has been telling people it’s not just her and Manchin who are opposed to #BuildBackBetter – many of their Democrat colleagues are opposed as well, but afraid to speak up. She tells them they’re ‘hiding behind her skirt,’” he wrote.
The cost of the bill has already been reduced in order to appease Manchin, but he has stated that he is worried about overspending and inflation, according to CNBC. Among his reservations is that spending of the act will take place over 10 years and the programs being funded will not last that long with Sen. Krysten Sinema (D-AZ) expressing similar concerns.
NBC reported that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is eager to vote on the bill early next year because the party is counting on the legislation to help in the 2022 midterm elections, along with improving Biden’s approval rating.
