The Green Bay Packers are looking to ramp up their special teams play next season, and the team has hired Rich Bisaccia as the special teams coordinator with that goal in mind.
“#Packers hire Rich Bisaccia as special teams coordinator. Welcome to Green Bay, coach! #GoPackGo,” the team tweeted.
Bisaccia’s resume includes more than 20 years of special teams coaching experience in the NFL. He also has held assistant coach positions for five teams and most recently was the interim head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Sportswriters last season called into question the special teams play of the Packers, with commentators on profootballtalk.com calling it the “one of the team’s weakest links.”
The Packers last season had four kicks (three field goals and one punt) blocked. Two of those four blocked kicks — one punt and one field goal — came in the divisional playoffs, when the 49ers upended Green Bay, 13-10. The kick and punt return teams also faired poorly, putting the team in the bottom three among all NFL teams in those categories, an article on acmepackingcompany.com said.
Fans can expect to see some different players in key special teams spots, though it’s unclear where the team’s roster will stand as the March deadline for salary cap requirements approaches.
