Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson views the prospect of Wisconsin hosting the upcoming Republican Convention as a win-win proposition for the state.
“We are one step closer to winning the 2024 @GOP convention for our city,” Johnson recently tweeted. “I have signed the contract framework that was approved 13-0 by our Council today. Local workers in hospitality will benefit, and we will be in a position to attract more big conventions. @visitmilwaukee”
The prospect was made possible by leaders across the state coming together in June to pass a vote in favor of a potential contract for hosting the event, WTMJ.com reported this week. And while nothing has been etched in stone, the steps taken by City officials signal that if the city is chosen, there will be an outline and a willingness already in place to move forward, including a readiness to apply for a $50 million grant to fund the plan.
Johnson, who is a Democrat, is on record with his support for the plan based on the economic gains it could mean for the area.
“My support for this agreement is primarily driven by the benefits hardworking Milwaukee residents will earn when the Republican National Convention comes to our city,” he said in the news report. “I also favor this effort because it positions Milwaukee to attract additional big conventions in the coming years.”
Milwaukee has recently become the place to be for high-profile Republican figures, with former President Donald Trump scheduled to visit the city on August 20 as part of his American Freedom Tour. Thus far, Milwaukee is the only city the tour is committed to visiting.
Trump is slated to be joined by Mike Pompeo, Dinesh D'Souza and Kimberly Guilfoyle, the tour's website said.
