Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway speaks out about the events that led to the sudden resignation of Madison Common Council Alderman Gary Halverson.
According to a Sept. 15 NBC 15 report, it was recently revealed Halverson had been a member of the Oath Keepers, a far-right extremist group. He resigned after the news came to light, and his family has become the target of vandalism.
“While elected officials must embrace feedback from, and disagreement with, our constituents, I do not believe that graffiti or protests at our homes are an appropriate form of engagement,” Rhodes-Conway said in a statement, according to NBC 15.
The Oath Keepers group is known to have had a large presence at the Jan. 6th, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, NBC 15 reported.
“I made a mistake when I joined a group that deceived me and other veterans,” Halverson said, according to NBC 15. “I quickly corrected it. I apologize for the embarrassment, distraction and pain this has caused.”
WKOW reported the mayor said she’s convinced Halverson’s decision to resign was the right one for his family and offered sympathies for all they have had to deal with.
