U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) has criticized the latest Senate Border Bill, arguing that it serves as a veiled attempt by Mitch McConnell to secure funding for Ukraine, while failing to adequately secure the U.S. border. The senator expressed these views during a recent episode of "Chicago Morning Answer" with Dan Proft.

Johnson attributed the strategy to McConnell, stating: "McConnell is the mastermind here, because McConnell wants funding for Ukraine". He went on to say that "He realized in his conference, there’s division and they may not be able to pass for Ukraine". Johnson further added that "They’d rather secure Ukraine’s border than our own", implying a prioritization of foreign interests over domestic security. Lastly, he suggested that an insincere promise was made as an appeasement measure: "And so as a sweetener, they came up with ‘we’re going to demand border security,’ but he wasn’t serious about it."

In his conversation with Proft, Johnson pointed out that McConnell has been involved in every debt negotiation in the government since 2007 when the national debt was less than a third of its current value nearing $35 million. According to Johnson, McConnell does not seem concerned about the financial security of future generations.

The details of the border bill stipulate no required activation of emergency border authority unless "during a period of 7 consecutive calendar days, there is an average of 5,000 or more aliens who are encountered each day," according to the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations. The bill also specifies that aliens "from noncontiguous countries shall not be included in calculating the sum of aliens encountered" for these activation levels.

According to his biography on his website, Johnson first entered politics in 2010 after spending three decades in business. He was reelected for his third term, representing Wisconsin, in 2022. A graduate from the University of Minnesota, Johnson resides in Oshkosh with his wife Jane.
