The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL) has announced a settlement involving Rev. Dr. Gregory Schulz, former professor of philosophy at Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW), who was suspended in February 2022 for criticizing the university's direction towards politically "woke" policies.

The terms of the settlement agreement between Dr. Schulz and CUW are confidential, but both parties are satisfied with the resolution. Following his retirement from CUW, Dr. Schulz expressed his satisfaction with the settlement and is looking forward to continuing his service to the Church elsewhere. He recently authored a new book titled "Anatomy of an Implosion," addressing the issue of woke ideologies in higher education.

In response to the settlement, Dr. Schulz commented on his hope for Concordia’s administrators to embrace academic freedom, honor professors' contracts, and reject woke ideologies in schools and universities. WILL Deputy Counsel, Dan Lennington, praised Dr. Schulz for standing up against discriminatory practices in higher education, stating, “I am heartened by this settlement and the change in direction by CUW. We are proud of our work defending Dr. Schulz’s rights and wish him the absolute best in his future work.”

The dispute between Dr. Schulz and Concordia University began over two years ago when he was suspended for publishing an essay criticizing the university's woke policies. The suspension violated Dr. Schulz's contract, leading to an investigation and campus oversight visit by officials from the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Following these events, new administrators and board members were appointed at CUW.

WILL’s representation of Dr. Schulz falls under its Equality Under the Law Project, which advocates for a colorblind society. Through this initiative, WILL has supported numerous individuals in cases against discriminatory practices.
