Eau Claire — The population of Eau Claire County, now approximately 108,000, has experienced significant growth in recent years, with Jon Hanson, field operations manager for Hoeft Builders, describing the past decade as "wild." Hanson also mentioned the construction of another apartment building, highlighting the influx of newcomers in their late 20s and early 30s.
According to economist Scott Niederjohn, Eau Claire County gained around 885 people between 2022 and 2023, with much of the growth attributed to individuals migrating from Minnesota. Niederjohn notes that Wisconsin has benefited from the migration, with a net gain of more than 3,000 people and $243 million in gross income from Minnesota in 2021 alone.
Hanson attributes the appeal of western Wisconsin to its quieter environment, lower crime rates, manageable traffic, and decent school system. The migration from Minnesota is also driven by the state's high tax rates, with Minnesota's tax rates significantly higher than Wisconsin's.
While Eau Claire County and neighboring Chippewa County face challenges such as recent hospital closures and workforce-related issues, there is a sense of optimism regarding future growth. Scott Rogers, vice president of government affairs for the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce, acknowledges the impact of hospital closures but highlights efforts to explore solutions and ramp up services.
Despite challenges like parking concerns and a lack of affordable housing, Jon Hanson remains positive about growth in the area, stating, "You always want growth. That’s what keeps guys like us in business."
In a state where growth can be slow, the influx of residents from Minnesota to western Wisconsin is driving prosperity and construction activity, showcasing the allure of the region.
