Governor Tony Evers has signed two significant housing bills aimed at contractors and workforce housing, a move welcomed by the Wisconsin Builders Association (WBA). The legislation includes Assembly Bill 607 and Assembly Bill 994.
Assembly Bill 607, introduced by Representative Penterman and Senator Roth, enables the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority to provide low or no-interest loans for rehabilitating certain residential properties. WBA Executive Director Brad Boycks stated, "As the shortage of affordable homes is ever present throughout the state, we are thrilled to see some relief being provided to those whose income does not exceed 120 percent of the median household income." He added that this bill would aid homeowners in making structural improvements and removing lead paint from houses built before 1980.
The second bill, Assembly Bill 994, authored by Representative Spiros and Senator Petrowski, revises contractor certification requirements. It introduces new credit categories to enhance knowledge for obtaining building permits for single-family homes. Cory Sillars, WBA President, commented on the bill: “Requiring accounting, lien law, ethics, and best business practices are essential for those building professionals seeking certification as a dwelling contractor.” The bill also mandates similar requirements for continuing education courses to ensure licensed professionals maintain high standards in construction and remodeling.
The Wisconsin Builders Association comprises 21 local associations advocating for the home building industry in Wisconsin. With over 4,000 members, it focuses on keeping housing affordable and accessible.
