The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is maintaining its recommendation for the current COVID-19 vaccine for individuals aged six months and older, including pregnant women. The department emphasizes that vaccination is crucial in preventing severe illness and curbing the spread of the virus. It also highlights that newborns rely on maternal antibodies from vaccinated mothers for protection.

Wisconsin Medicaid will continue to cover the vaccine for eligible members, encompassing children and pregnant individuals. "The current COVID-19 vaccine was thoroughly reviewed for safety and effectiveness and continues to be an important tool in preventing severe illness and death," stated Kirsten Johnson, Secretary of the Department of Health Services.

The vaccine's approval followed extensive testing, clinical trials, and reviews by medical experts. It received authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as well as recommendations from both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the CDC director. Recent changes in CDC guidance were not based on new data or studies but were issued outside normal processes. After national approval, Wisconsin independently evaluates FDA and CDC guidelines to offer clinical advice to local providers and residents.

COVID-19 remains a cause of illness, hospitalization, and mortality. The DHS urges residents to stay updated with all recommended vaccinations to safeguard themselves and their families against preventable diseases. Individuals are encouraged to consult with healthcare providers or visit Vaccines.gov to determine necessary vaccines.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services continues monitoring federal updates on COVID-19 vaccine recommendations to assess potential impacts on state health policies. Any modifications will be communicated promptly to the public.
