Barbara Resheske, a Wisconsin voter and elections observer, expressed concerns about Susan Crawford, a candidate for Wisconsin’s Supreme Court. Resheske said that Crawford is “against voter ID.” She made this statement to the Sconi on March 19.
“Susan Crawford is against voter ID,” said Resheske. “That means anyone can walk in and vote without being a citizen. As a taxpayer it’s important to prove who you say you are. This system of checks and balances insures accountability, and transparency.”
According to Ballotpedia, Brad Schimel, former Wisconsin Attorney General and Waukesha County Circuit Court judge, will compete against Susan Crawford, Dane County Circuit Court judge, in the upcoming Wisconsin Supreme Court election on April 1. The court currently has a 4-3 liberal majority. However, Justice Ann Walsh Bradley’s retirement makes the seat competitive. A victory for Crawford would maintain the liberal majority.
Wisconsin Watch reports that Susan Crawford has been a vocal opponent of the state’s voter identification law. In 2011, she represented the League of Women Voters in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the law, arguing it imposed undue burdens on voters. She described the law as “draconian” in 2018. In 2016, Crawford suggested that allowing voters to sign an affidavit attesting to their identity could serve as an acceptable alternative to presenting photo identification.
Andrew Iverson, Executive Director for the Republican Party of Wisconsin, said in a press release: “This is not just about one candidate’s radical record – it’s about the future of fair elections in Wisconsin.” He added that “Susan Crawford’s disdain for a law that is supported by the overwhelming majority of Wisconsinites can’t be hidden. If elected, it’s nearly guaranteed Crawford and the liberal Supreme Court majority will dismantle this critical safeguard and jeopardize the integrity of our elections.”
Resheske also shared her observations as an elections observer: “I saw people trying to vote from another state, without proof of Wisconsin residency!”
