The Wisconsin Republican Caucus has issued a statement condemning the U.S Capitol violence.

“We condemn violence at the U.S Capitol in the strongest possible terms. It is unacceptable and un-American," according to the statement. "We cannot abide this assault on our republic. Violence no matter the political affiliation or motive, has no place in our system of government and should not be tolerated.”

State Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg, Sen. Andre Jacque of De Pere, and Sen. Eric Wimberger of Green Bay were among the Republican senators who signed the letter condemning violence.

The attack on the U.S. Capitol occurred as federal lawmakers were gearing up to count the Electoral College votes and officially declare President-elect Joe Biden as the winner of the general election last November.

Protesters stormed the Capitol Building and were able to make their way into the building, where they ended up shattering windowpanes in doors and eventually made their way into the House chamber.

President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he also condemned the violence and called for peace, also saying the inauguration will be orderly.

“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” he said.

The riot caused one woman to be fatally shot by police, while three more died and over 50 were arrested, according to D.C. Metropolitan Police reports. It wasn’t until late that night and early into the morning of Jan. 7 when lawmakers could continue counting the votes. Biden was officially declared the winner after 3 a.m.
