The University of Wisconsin (UW) will be well represented in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as a current student, and two former students, will compete in the games.
Zach Ziemek will make his second appearance at the games as he competes in the decathlon.
Graduating from UW in 2016, Ziemek qualified for a spot on the track and field squad by winning in the long jump and pole vault at the U.S. Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
Ziemek looks to improve on his seventh place finish in the decathlon at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro.
Ziemek also won the NCAA Indoor heptathlon in 2016 and finished as a runner-up in the decathlon.
Govenor Tony Evers is certainly proud of the Badger representation as he recently tweeted his support for the athletes.
“Wisconsin is full of incredibly talented athletes, and I'm excited to see Badgers compete in this year's Olympics,” Evers said. “Congratulations to all the Badgers headed to Tokyo!”
The other two athletes with UW ties are women competing in swimming and track and field.
Georgia Ellenwood, a 2018 graduate of UW, will represent her native Canada in the heptathlon, a track competition.
Ellenwood is no stranger to the event as she hoisted a gold medal at a Germany event and won the NCAA Outdoor heptathlon title as a collegiate senior.
Maryland native, Phoebe Bacon, is a freshman at UW and is coming off winning the NCAA title in the 200-yard backstroke in March.
Bacon took second in the Team USA trials in Omaha to garner a spot in the women’s swim team for the 200-meter backstroke.
Bacon finished in 2:06.46, only 0.73 behind first-place finisher, Rhyan White.
