Wisconsin National Guard soldiers are headed to the U.S.-Mexico border after the governor was asked in May to assist in aid at the border.
Earlier this month, the National Guard announced that 125 soldiers from the 229th Engineer Company out of Prairie du Chien will go to the border on federal deployment.
They will be deployed for approximately a year, however, a utilization date has yet to be announced.
Rep. Barbara Dittrich (R-Oconomowoc) tweeted that the help was long overdue after she visited the area herself.
“Months ago, I traveled to the border and saw this crisis firsthand,” she said. “At that time, I called on (Gov. Evers) to act and send aid immediately. Instead, he did nothing. Glad to see help is now on the way, but frustrated that our governor failed to lead yet again.”
The Wisconsin brigade is part of an effort that already includes 23 states, with all state troops operating under federal control and funded by the Department of Defense.
“The outstanding professionalism and preparedness of our troops enables the Wisconsin National Guard to rapidly respond for any mission, and I’m tremendously proud of their dedication,” Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Paul Knapp said.
