Advocates and some Wisconsin lawmakers have continued their push to more than double the state's minimum wage by raising it to $15 an hour which supporters said would help boost the local economy.

Democrats in the state legislature introduced a plan last month that would gradually raise the minimum wage that would start with $10.15 an hour once the law took effect, and raise it to $15 the next year, Channel 3000 reported. The bill was officially introduced earlier this month.

"When you pay employees a fair wage, they stick around," state Sen. Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee) wrote in a July 19 tweet. "Twelve years is way too long to be stuck at the same minimum wage. #RaiseTheWage now."

State Sen. Melissa Agard (D-Madison) said the current minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and hasn't been changed in more than a decade in a guest column she wrote for Madison.com. In order to put it into context, Agard wrote the last time the state's minimum wage was raised the Black Eyed Peas "I've Got a Feeling" topped the charts in America.

The Wisconsin Examiner reported that many business owners have complained about high employee turnover because of low wages and lack of incentive.

According the the same report, a movement has been created to advocate for the plan to raise the minimum wage.
