A state representative said that he opposed legislation preventing the teaching of critical race theory in schools because it looks to render black and brown people invisible.

Wisconsin State Journal reported that the State Assembly approved the ban 61-37.

Under AB411, all school districts in Wisconsin are required to post their curriculum on the school district website, and their teachers are barred from teaching discrimination on the base of sex or race, including teaching that a member of a particular race or sex is responsible for actions committed by other people of that same race or sex.

“AB411 seeks to erase the history of black and brown folks in America, our struggle and lived experience,” Rep. Supreme Moore Omokunde (D-Milwaukee) tweeted. "My vote is NO. Rather than sidelining true history and lived experience, we Wisconsinites must engage and come to terms with it if we are to form a ‘more perfect union.’"

State Superintendent Jill Underly said in a statement that the measure hurts students more than helps them.

“Educators do not need to accuse a student of playing a part in this history to teach them about its factual existence, Underly said. “Ignoring these historic events does not change them or make them go away. It does a gross disservice to our kids and their future. We’re better than this.”

Wisconsin State Journal reported that Rep. Sylvia Ortiz-Velez, D-Milwaukee, crossed the aisle to lend support to the Republicans on the bill.
