Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) tells people to "stop the madness" in an Oct. 11 tweet about Southwest Airlines tarnishing its reputation from vaccine mandates.

Over 2,000 Southwest flights were canceled over the weekend. The official reason given was “ATC issues and disruptive weather,” despite no disruptive weather along the routes that Southwest operates.

“As a loyal Southwest customer who has been flying safely throughout the pandemic and is utterly opposed to vaccine mandates, I’m asking, stop the madness before more damage is done," Johnson tweeted.

Cancellation rates across competing airlines were 10 times lower during this period than that of Southwest. Many sources on Twitter claimed that the cancellations were due to a massive pilot walkout in protest of Southwest’s vaccine mandate, told by RedState.

According to Politifact, Southwest denies that the cancellations were related to the vaccine mandate, despite cancellations that took place shortly after Southwest Airlines Pilot Association petitioned a court to temporarily block the company’s vaccine mandate. Dallas Morning News reported that over 2,000 flights were canceled between the night of Oct. 8 and the morning of Oct. 10.

Bloomberg reports that the petition to block the mandate states that the vaccine mandate is a violation of the Railway Labor Act.
