U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) agrees with the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down the Biden administration COVID-19 vaccine mandates for many private companies.
“At least some sanity has been returned by SCOTUS blocking the [Occupational Safety and Health Administration] vaccine mandate,” Johnson tweeted.
The mandate would apply to companies with at least 100 employees, about 85 million people, the Supreme Court said in its ruling.
"OSHA has never before imposed such a mandate," the ruling said. "Nor has Congress."
The mandate extends beyond OSHA's reach, the high court said.
"Although Congress has indisputably given OSHA the power to regulate occupational dangers, it has not given that agency the
power to regulate public health more broadly," the court said. "Requiring the vaccination of 84 million Americans, selected simply be-
cause they work for employers with more than 100 employees, certainly falls in the latter category."
States and employers argued that the mandate would cost billions of dollars in compliance costs and cause hundreds of thousands of employees to quit their jobs, the court said.
The Biden administration countered that it would save 6,500 lives and prevent hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations, the court said.
"It is not our role to weigh such tradeoffs," the court said. "In our system of government, that is the responsibility of those chosen by he people through democratic processes."
