Wisconsin families who missed out on free breakfasts or lunches at school because of the COVID-19 pandemic will receive benefits under the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) Program.
The program is for qualifying families who's children attend schools that participate in the USDA's National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program and are enrolled in the school's free or reduced-priced meals program, according to WFRV.
"The P-EBT Program for the current school year is different from prior years because most children have been learning in-person at their schools since the fall of 2021," Karen Timberlake, secretary-designee for the Wisconsin Department of Human Services, told WFRV. "Nevertheless, COVID-19 has continued to disrupt some classrooms, keeping some students learning from home or absent, and this has caused some children to miss school-provided meals that thousands of Wisconsin families rely on."
The agency said it would distribute $7.10 per child for each day they missed out on the meals, WFRV reported.
The benefits would be put directly on the P-EBT or QUEST cards families already have, and families receiving the benefits for the first time would get a new card, WFRV reported.
The article noted there are five regular payments of the P-EBT funds scheduled in the coming months.
