A new US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) report details that the recorded number of Southwest border crossings this year has reached a single year high at 1,860,009, with at least 227,547 coming during the month of September, totaling a 12% increase over the month prior as the number of monthly encounter numbers continued their summer climb.
Deeper CBP analysis finds that nearly one in five, or 19% of involved individuals, had at least one prior encounter over the previous 12 months.
With midterm elections playing out across much of the country earlier this month, many voters seem to view those numbers as being directly tied to the fentanyl crisis plaguing their homes. Here in Wisconsin in particular the opioid epidemic easily took center stage as one of the most hotly debated issues.
With Sen. Ron Johnson on record with his pledge to secure the border, the National Border Patrol Council threw its support behind him, with the endorsement paying dividends in his razor-thin victory over Democratic opponent Mandela Barnes.
“The National Border Patrol Council has personally witnessed Senator Johnson's dedication to and care for all Wisconsinites," the group told FreeBeacon.com. "Wisconsin and America need Senator Johnson's strong voice, caring spirit, and leadership in the U.S. Senate.”
From March 2021 to March 2022, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports in Wisconsin alone there were over 1,800 overdose deaths reported, with a DEA Intelligence Report adding much of the destruction can be directly traced to the New Generation Jalisco and the Sinaloa cartels, which are both seen as the primary traffickers of fentanyl here in the U.S., much of it through trafficking corridors along the southern border.
As Election Day crept closer, Fox News reported 12,000 rainbow fentanyl pills were seized at Los Angeles International Airport, with officials now warning about the possibility of such pills ending up being disguised as candy and maybe even winding up in kids’ Halloween trick-or-treat stashes.
In a recent op-ed piece, Washington Post columnist Marc Theissen argues the ongoing crisis at the border directly stems from President Joe Biden’s law policies.
“As the migrant crisis has grown over the past year, fentanyl seizures rose 56 percent in March 2022 compared with March 2021,” he added. “And this surge in illegal drugs has contributed to the crime surge in U.S. cities.”
