Backers of Democrat Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Janet Protasiewicz want court challenges to the state’s school choice programs, which now provide scholarships to 86,139 students in 373 private schools.

That's according to an analysis of Wisconsin Department of Instruction (DPI) data by The Sconi.

Statewide, 43 percent of students benefiting from school choice-- 36,644-- attend a Catholic school.

Protasiewicz herself attended private Catholic Pius XI High School in Wauwatosa from 1977-1981. But she's now a staunch supporter of teacher’s unions, backed by the Wisconsin Education Association Council and its President, Peggy Wirtz-Olsen, the state's leading opponent of Wisconsin’s School Choice program.

They want to eliminate public school competition from private school choice programs like Wisconsin’s, one of the nation’s largest.

Last month, Wirtz-Olsen and podcaster Kirk Bangstad discussed how removing “private school vouchers that are bleeding our public schools dry” would be a priority in a liberal-majority Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Arizona State Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick, who represented Wisconsin school choice advocates defending challenges to the program in the 1990s, told the MacIver Institute last month that a Protasiewicz win will lead to attempts to get the court declare the program unconstitutional, killing choice scholarships for Wisconsin schools.

According to the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, in 2022-23 State of Wisconsin grants to private schools with 86,139 students enrolled totaled approximately $444,424 million, or about $5,139 per student.

All told, Wisconsin state taxpayers spent $17.9 billion on public K-12 schools in 2021 and 2022.

Total statewide public school enrollment was 829,143 in 2021-2022, down from 854,959 in 2018-2019.

Wisconsin public schools received $2.614 billion in Federal COVID-19 Aid, according to the state Legislative Fiscal Bureau.

Milwaukee is home to the first school choice program in the nation, founded in 1990 by Republican Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson. It was expanded statewide in 2013.

The City of Milwaukee has a disproportionate amount of scholarship recipients and stands to lose the most. It is home to 10% of Wisconsin’s population but 55% of its school choice scholarship students.

Some 31,350 Milwaukee students received $244 million in 2022-23, attending 90 different private schools.

Racine County (4,815 students/$33.6 million), Waukesha County (6,057 students/$19.7 million) and Brown County (3,976 students/$10.8 million) also have large concentrations of schools with scholarship recipients.

State research shows students in the Milwaukee program attending Catholic schools outperform their public school peers by 9% in English and 4% in math.

Some 90 of the schools and 31,350 of those students are in the city of Milwaukee, DPI data shows.

About 44 percent— 13,670— of Milwaukee school choice recipients attended a Catholic school, according to the analysis.
