U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde expressed grave concern over the issue of illegal border crossings, stating "the future of our country is at stake." His comments were made in response to the 140,000 successful illegal crossings at the southern border, commonly referred to as "got-aways." Hovde made this statement in a March 25 post on X.
"Chief Owens shouldn't be the only one that is concerned by 140,000+ “gotaways," said Eric D. Hovde, Employee, according to X. "Politicians in DC should be working together to fix this issue because the future of our country is at stake. I promise you this: as your Senator, getting our border under control and securing America will be one of my top priorities."
According to a report by CBS News, Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens revealed that apprehensions since October have reached nearly 1 million and are projected to reach 2 million by the end of the fiscal year. Owens stated, "That number is a large number, but what's keeping me up at night is the 140,000 known got-aways." Despite surveillance records documenting these illegal crossings, the immigrants involved were not detained. Owens characterized the situation at the border as a "national security threat."

In a report from the Center for Immigration Studies, it was noted that the number of illegal immigrants now "far exceeds" that of legal migrants. The report further explained that drug cartels play a significant role in this industry by smuggling migrants across the border for payment. These cartels reportedly generate massive profits from this illicit activity—approximately "$30 million" daily or almost $1 billion per month. The fees charged to migrants for smuggling services typically amount to around $8,000; however, this figure can increase depending on factors such as travel distance. For instance, migrants from different continents may be required to pay "up to $50,000" in smuggling fees.
