School Incident in Mount Horeb, Wis. Under Investigation by DOJ

MOUNT HOREB, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is actively looking into the recent incident that took place in the Village of Mount Horeb, Wis. on May 1, 2024.

According to the report, a citizen alerted authorities after observing an individual heading towards Mount Horeb Middle School carrying what seemed to be a long gun. Law enforcement officers responded to the scene and encountered the subject matching the description near the middle school. Despite commands to drop the weapon, the subject did not comply and instead aimed the weapon at the officers. Subsequently, the officers discharged their firearms, resulting in the subject being fatally shot. The weapon recovered was identified as a Ruger .177 caliber pellet rifle.

Fortunately, no officers or bystanders sustained physical injuries during the incident. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure. It was noted that body cameras were worn by the officers at the time of the event.

The investigation is being led by the DCI, with support from various law enforcement agencies and specialist units. All parties involved are fully cooperating in the ongoing investigation process.

DCI is diligently examining the evidence to establish the facts surrounding the incident, with plans to provide a comprehensive investigative report to the Dane County District Attorney upon the conclusion of the investigation.
