FOIA Request Sent to Lafayette County Election Department Regarding Ballot Counting Methods on October 30, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Lafayette County Election Department in Wisconsin on October 30, 2024. The request, made by The Sconi, a media organization committed to comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought information about the methods being used to count ballots in the upcoming election.

The Sconi specifically requested details on whether the ballot counting process would be manual or automated. If manual counting was to be employed, The Sconi also asked for an estimated number of people who would be working on election night.

In the request, The Sconi emphasized its role as a member of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public. It stated that access to public records is essential for fulfilling professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

The Sconi further argued that given its role in disseminating information, it should be eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional. As of now, there has been no response from the Lafayette County Election Department regarding this FOIA request.
