U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) addressed the Senate floor to advocate for his Eliminate Shutdowns Act, which aims to prevent government shutdowns by implementing two-week rolling continuing resolutions in cases where appropriations lapse.
During his remarks, Sen. Johnson expressed frustration with the recurring budget impasses. “Aren’t you getting sick and tired of these government shutdowns? The drama, the turmoil, the partisan bickering, and holding the American people hostage for demands of billions and billions of dollars for more spending we can’t afford?” he said.
Sen. Johnson emphasized that his proposed legislation is intended to be a nonpartisan solution. “The American people don’t like these shutdowns. They want them ended. We have a very simple bill, not partisan, that offers no advantage to anybody. It keeps the government open and gives appropriators time to do appropriating, appropriate those departments, and end all the chaos, all the turmoil, and all the games with people’s lives,” he concluded.
Senator Johnson has been elected multiple times in Wisconsin's U.S. Senate races: he won against Mandela Barnes in 2022 with 50.4% of the vote compared to Barnes' 49.4%. In previous elections, he defeated Russ Feingold in both 2016 (50.2% vs 46.8%) and 2010 (51.9% vs 47%).
