Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital in Wisconsin is contributing to the community by supporting the Meals on Wheels program. The hospital's nutritional services team collaborates with Meals on Wheels of Stevens Point to deliver meals to homebound individuals, including the elderly and disabled.

The hospital dedicates 2.5 full-time equivalent staff hours daily to prepare these meals. Volunteers then collect the meals from the hospital and distribute them across the greater Stevens Point area. Catherine Noth, manager of food and nutrition services at Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital, stated, "Our team is passionate about the healing power of healthy, great-tasting food. We are gratified to know that our time and talents are being shared with those in need throughout our community."

Meals are delivered from Monday through Thursday along 16 routes each day, serving between 8 and 14 people per route. The program relies entirely on volunteers who contribute as their schedules allow, with a continuous need for more volunteers due to growing demand.

Primarily serving individuals over 60 years old, with a significant portion being over 75 years old, the program offers meals tailored to specific dietary needs such as low sodium or cholesterol options. Tasha Beestman, executive director of Meals on Wheels of Stevens Point, highlighted that in 2023 alone, they provided 37,517 meals alongside wellness checks and necessary interventions.

Funding for Meals on Wheels comes from grants, donations, Older Americans Act funds, and recipient contributions averaging $2.50 per meal. Despite this suggested contribution amount, no one is denied service if unable to pay; last year saw over 14,000 free meals distributed at a cost of $74,718.

This initiative by Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital underlines its commitment to enhancing health outcomes while fostering connection among vulnerable community members.
