Ahead of the Wisconsin Spring Primary Election on February 18, 2025, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding citizens about obtaining identification valid for voting. The DMV emphasizes that this identification is available free of charge.
Identification valid for voting includes a driver license, an identification card, military or student ID cards, among others. It is important to note that there is no separate "voter ID." Additionally, a federally compliant REAL ID card is not necessary for voting purposes. For those uncertain whether their identification meets the requirements, it is advised to visit the Wisconsin Elections Commission website.
To begin the process of obtaining an ID for voting, individuals can start online to view a list of required documents needed at a DMV Customer Service Center. This information can be found at wisconsindmv.gov/idcards. If the ID card cannot be issued in time for voting, U.S. citizens have access to a process that provides a receipt valid for taking to the polls.
For questions regarding obtaining an ID for voting purposes, individuals are encouraged to call DMV’s toll-free hotline at (844) 588-1069. Inquiries related to voter eligibility, poll locations, voter registration information or other election details should be directed to the Wisconsin Elections Commission at elections.wi.gov.
Applications can be started now either online at wisconsindmv.gov or by visiting a local DMV Customer Service Center. To locate a DMV center and check hours, services and wait times, individuals should visit wisconsindmv.gov/centers.
