On Friday, U.S. Senator Ron Johnson from Wisconsin joined forces with Senator Mike Lee of Utah to introduce the Protecting Life in Foreign Assistance Act. This legislative effort aims to ensure that foreign aid does not fund or promote abortions overseas.
The origins of this policy trace back to 1984 when President Ronald Reagan first established the Mexico City Policy. This policy prohibited the use of family planning foreign assistance funds by organizations involved in providing or promoting abortions or advocating for changes to abortion laws in other countries. Since its inception, the policy has been alternately rescinded and reinstated by successive Democratic and Republican administrations.
Senators joining Johnson and Lee in this initiative include Roger Marshall (Kansas), Marsha Blackburn (Tennessee), Cindy Hyde-Smith (Mississippi), James Lankford (Oklahoma), Marco Rubio (Florida), Tim Scott (South Carolina), Ted Budd (North Carolina), Mike Braun (Indiana), Kevin Cramer (North Dakota), John Kennedy (Louisiana), Bill Hagerty (Tennessee), Todd Young (Indiana), Steve Daines (Montana), Tom Cotton (Arkansas), Deb Fischer (Nebraska), John Thune (South Dakota), Pete Ricketts (Nebraska), Mike Rounds (South Dakota), Josh Hawley (Missouri) and Rand Paul (Kentucky).
