Wisconsin residents who have not yet obtained the necessary identification to vote in Tuesday's Spring Primary Election still have time to do so. The Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is offering assistance to those without a Wisconsin driver license, ID, or other required forms of identification.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission website provides details on acceptable IDs for voting. It clarifies that there is no separate "voter ID" and a federally compliant REAL ID card is not necessary for voting.
To acquire an official Wisconsin ID card, applicants must present documentation such as a birth certificate, proof of identity, and proof of residency in Wisconsin. Individuals should bring any available documents to the DMV and complete two forms. The DMV's website offers a locator tool to find nearby DMV offices and check wait times. Once processed, a photo ID document will be sent via overnight mail for use at the polls. Alternatively, voters may complete a provisional ballot until their photo ID arrives.
The DMV provides free ID cards for voting purposes to U.S. citizens. For questions about obtaining an ID for voting, individuals can call the DMV’s toll-free hotline at (844) 588-1069. Additional information on voter eligibility, polling locations, voter registration, and other election-related inquiries can be found on the Wisconsin Elections Commission website at elections.wi.gov.
