During National Consumer Protection Week, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) introduced a new identity verification process and alert tool aimed at safeguarding consumer identities.
The Wisconsin DMV has implemented an automated identity verification system to protect customers from potential fraud. This feature is available on several DMV applications and involves comparing a selfie photo taken by the customer with their existing photo on file with the DMV. If the images match, the customer can proceed with their application; if not, they are prevented from using the online service. "This simple step to verify a customer’s identity in real time will ensure the integrity of all Wisconsin DMV products," said DMV Deputy Administrator Corey Kleist. He noted that this innovation has already reduced incidents of fraud.
Additionally, consumers can sign up for account activity alerts through DMV’s eNotify service at wisconsindmv.gov/eNotify. Enrolled users receive text or email notifications about activities on their accounts, which can help prevent fraudulent actions such as unauthorized address changes or replacement ID orders. "Just like your banking and other online accounts, you can add a layer of protection to your DMV information," Kleist explained. He emphasized that eNotify is a free safety component that alerts users to potential fraud attempts.
eNotify also offers renewal reminders for vehicle plates, driver licenses, or IDs. Customers are encouraged to verify any off-cycle renewal notifications by visiting wisconsindmv.gov. Over one million Wisconsin residents have enrolled in eNotify.
