The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is currently soliciting comments for a proposed special pesticide registration aimed at controlling disease, nematodes, and weeds in ginseng cultivation. Stakeholders have until April 27, 2025, to submit their feedback regarding the proposed use of Vapam HL soil fumigant, which is manufactured by AMVAC and features the active ingredient metam sodium.

Vapam HL, though approved for use on various crops post-harvest and pre-planting in Wisconsin, lacks specific registration for use on ginseng. Consequently, a special registration is necessary to permit its application on soil prior to ginseng planting. This measure is crucial as it helps prevent ginseng root infection, which can lead to abnormal growth, diminished fiber content, and issues with plant health during export.

This proposal marks the second special registration for Vapam HL, with plans for it to remain effective until December 31, 2029.

An initial environmental assessment suggests that a full environmental review is not required for this proposed registration. Comments submitted by 4:30 p.m. on April 27, 2025, will be included in the assessment record. Interested parties can request copies of the assessment and submit their comments via mail to Alyssa Foss at DATCP, PO Box 8911, Madison, WI, 53708-8911, or through email.

The special registration process offers states the flexibility to approve additional uses for pesticide products beyond their labeled applications without needing federal approval. This flexibility assists growers in tackling localized pest issues, such as insect infestations, fungal diseases, and invasive grasses and weeds resistant to federally registered products. Further details can be accessed through the appropriate channels.
