Glenn Grothman, a representative from Wisconsin, said that Governor Tony Evers has reversed his stance on immigration enforcement following the arrest of a judge accused of aiding an undocumented immigrant. The statement was made on the social media platform X.
"Governor Evers is conveniently backpedaling his tone on ICE," said Glenn S. Grothman, U.S. Representative from Wisconsin. "A Milwaukee Judge was arrested for helping an illegal immigrant flee arrest. Evers is suddenly saying, “ICE can do what ICE wants to do. This is the same governor whose agency advised Wisconsin employees not to comply with ICE agents."
In April 2025, Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice. She allegedly assisted an undocumented immigrant in evading U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at a courthouse. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Dugan directed the defendant and his lawyer to leave through a side door to avoid ICE agents who were waiting to detain him. This incident has sparked renewed discussions about the involvement of local judiciary in federal immigration enforcement.
The Wisconsin Department of Administration released a memo in April 2025 advising state employees on handling inquiries from ICE agents. As reported by Wisconsin Public Radio, the guidance instructed workers not to answer questions or allow access to nonpublic areas without consulting legal counsel first. Governor Tony Evers defended this memo as a lawful precautionary measure, while critics claimed it discouraged cooperation with immigration enforcement.
According to the Wisconsin Examiner, four county sheriffs in Wisconsin signed agreements in 2025 to enhance cooperation with ICE in identifying and deporting undocumented immigrants within local jails. This development marks a departure from previous years when many counties reduced their involvement with federal immigration enforcement, highlighting ongoing divisions within the state regarding public safety and immigrant rights.
Representative Glenn Grothman serves on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee and chairs its Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs. His official biography describes him as a strong advocate for stricter immigration laws and border control, consistently advocating for increased federal enforcement and oversight of immigration policy.
