Timothy M. O’Shea, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Javaris Nunn from Sun Prairie has been sentenced to 30 months in prison. Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson delivered the sentence on June 24, 2025, following Nunn's guilty plea on March 26, 2025, for possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon.
Nunn was apprehended on December 28, 2023, when officers stopped a vehicle lacking a license plate. Inside the vehicle, next to Nunn, officers discovered a backpack containing an unloaded Glock .380 caliber handgun and a loaded Smith & Wesson .45 caliber handgun with an altered serial number. Although Nunn denied any knowledge of these firearms, forensic analysis by the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory revealed his DNA on both weapons.
Nunn has prior felony convictions including theft from a person, felon in possession of a firearm, and robbery. These convictions prohibit him from legally possessing firearms or ammunition.
Judge Peterson considered both Nunn’s difficult past and positive traits alongside his criminal history and the seriousness of his offense during sentencing. "Carrying firearms was a recipe for disaster," stated Judge Peterson. The judge ordered that Nunn serve three years of supervised release after completing his sentence which will run concurrently with a state revocation sentence.
The investigation leading to this charge involved the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and the ATF Madison Crime Gun Task Force which includes federal agents from ATF and Task Force Officers from various agencies in the Western District of Wisconsin. Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan prosecuted this case.
This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative by the U.S. Justice Department aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration among state and federal prosecutors along with law enforcement agencies to tackle gun-related crimes involving felons illegally possessing firearms and ammunition as well as violent crimes linked to drug use involving guns.
