Wisconsin clerks may have altered absentee ballots

Journatic

Witnesses are alleging that county and municipal clerks and poll workers across the state might have altered mail-in ballots, according to “The Dan O’Donnell Show.”

Witnesses say they saw municipal clerks and vote counters filling out the witness signatures on absentee ballots themselves. Wisconsin Statute 6.86 requires that a witness sign the absentee ballot and include their address. It states that if there is not a witness listed, the ballot is considered invalid and is returned to the voter. .

WISN suggests that these clerks may have invalidated thousands of absentee voters by acting on the unlawful advice of the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC).

The WEC first told voters that they must have a witness to sign their ballot, but then told clerks in October that they could be the witness instead, which contradicts the state’s statute.

The Republican Party of Wisconsin believes there are thousands of absentee ballots where this occurred. Currently, President Donald Trump’s campaign is investigating on what scale ballots were altered. He’s already called for a recount of the state’s votes.

Retired Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman told WISN that the statute is clear regarding absentee ballots that do not have witness addresses on them.

Absentee voting has been on the rise in recent years and errors and fraud have become a major issue. In Florida, nearly 2% of mail-in ballots are rejected, which is double the rejection rate for people who vote in-person.

The New York Times reported that while 35.5 million voters requested absentee ballots in the 2008 presidential election, only 27.9 million of those votes were counted.
