U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) is calling for an extension of the enhanced monthly federal child tax credit, set to expire at the end of this month.

“More than a million children in Wisconsin have benefited from the monthly Child Tax Credit – from groceries, day care, to other living costs. I’m working to extend this tax cut into next year for families and put more money in their pockets to support themselves and our economy,” Baldwin tweeted.

About 1.2 million children in Wisconsin have benefited from the tax credit and 45,000 lifted out of poverty, according to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, Up North News reported.

President Joe Biden's proposed Build Back Better Act would extend the payments for another year but Senate Republicans and two Democrats have so far blocked passage of the bill, the story said.

The tax credit would potentially be extended in January even without passage of Build Back Better according to some Democrats, Politico reported.

A single mother working full time at the federal minimum wage and has a toddler and a second grader is receiving $6,600 this year through the child tax credit, according to Kris Cox, deputy director of federal tax policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, CNBC reported.

If the enhanced credit is allowed to expire, that same family would have received only $1,800 through the child tax credit next year, the story said.
