U.S. citizens are worried about the direction the country and the economy are headed in under the Biden Administration, according to the results of a McLaughlin & Associates survey.

The survey found that many Americans believe that the economy is headed in the wrong direction.

McLaughlin & Associates wanted input on voters' concerns during its monthly survey of national trends related to the American political environment and surveyed 1,000 likely general election voters from Jan. 13 to 18.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has stated that he hopes that $1.6 billion of the expected $3.8 billion surplus from the Legislative Fiscal Bureau goes to aid citizens in the state during the ongoing pandemic. He stated his proposal would “provide a $150 per person surplus refund for every resident of Wisconsin.” Another $700 million would go toward educational concerns.

These economic concerns come on the heels of President Joe Biden stating that Americans are finding better jobs with better pay and better benefits:

“The GDP numbers for my first year show that we are finally building an American economy for the 21st century, with the fastest economic growth in nearly four decades, along with the greatest year of job growth in American history,” Biden stated in a press release. “And, for the first time in 20 years, our economy grew faster than China’s.”

The national survey found that, in the Midwest, 69% of people thought the country was off-track, while 28% believed the country was on the upswing, economically.

Overall, the recent poll found that 62% of Americans' confidence in the economy is dwindling, with 30% believing that it was getting better. One year ago 52% of Americans believed that the economy was getting worse and 42% were of the opinion that it was getting better.

Additionally, the McLaughlin & Associates survey found that 52% of those polled believed America is in a recession, as opposed to 40% who did not share that notion. When asked in March 2021, less than 50% of Americans felt the U.S. economy was not in a recession.
