Amazon received $54 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Wisconsin communities for six projects.
Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Wisconsin provided the 18th-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.
Wisconsin is ranked behind Alabama (2 projects/$57 million) and ahead of Louisiana (7 projects/$49 million), New Jersey (3 projects/$45 million), and Florida (13 projects/$43 million).
The most expensive subsidy provided in Wisconsin was by the Oak Creek government, which offered $21 million to Amazon in state tax credits and tax increment financing.
The second largest subsidy was worth $17 million for tax increment financing in Kenosha.
There was one development which received an undisclosed subsidy amount.
Wisconsin has been embroiled in many high-profile, high-cost projects, which caused more information to be released about subsidies and program outcomes.
Unfortunately, publications about tax expenditures are often unorganized, and reviews focus more on administrative issues rather than economic and taxpayer impacts.
As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
