The Science and Technology Educational Access to Development (STEAD) Funds Program aims to support educators and community partners in Vermont as they develop curriculum and programming for K–12 students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program focuses on inclusivity and aligns with the state's growing STEM research ecosystem.

According to the program guidelines, STEM is defined broadly. It includes not only traditional fields such as biology, chemistry, ecology, computer science, engineering, and mathematics but also astronomy, advanced manufacturing, environmental studies, psychology, economics, agriculture, the science of learning, and other disciplines that align with National Science Foundation funding priorities.

The initiative targets historically underfunded institutions. Its goal is to provide these organizations with resources needed to create equitable STEM education programs that can help build research capacity within Vermont. STEAD Funds are designed to:

“Actively engage participants in STEM learning.”

“Demonstrate the wonder, excitement, and relevance of STEM in learning and everyday life.”

“Expose participants to local STEM research, degree and training programs, or careers.”

“Expand or develop STEM curriculum or programs.”

“Address local challenges to STEM education in Vermont.”

Funded projects are expected to contribute to expanding Vermont’s research ecosystem by preparing students with skills and awareness necessary for future study or careers in STEM fields.
