Scarlett Johnson, a parent advocate from Wisconsin and member of Moms for Liberty, expressed her strong disapproval on Twitter on July 10 regarding a recent piece of news shared by Wisconsin Right Now. The news highlighted Marshfield Clinic's initiation of puberty blockers and other gender-affirming therapies for minors as young as 14 years old.
"Breaking in WI: Marshfield Clinic begins puberty blockers on minors at age 14. At age 16, the boys receive estrogen and the girls receive testosterone treatments, which is known as hormone therapy," Johnson said in her tweet.
Wisconsin Right Now reported that the clinic, located in Wisconsin, has been allowing these practices with minors for several years.
"Minors under age 18 are receiving surgical and medical intervention for gender dysphoria in Wisconsin, even as a growing body of research is raising concern about such treatments, especially hormone therapies, spurring European countries like Finland to impose new guidelines," Johnson said in a Tweet.
In another recent report, it was revealed that individuals under the age of 18 in Wisconsin have been undergoing gender-affirming surgeries and hormone therapies. The report specifically highlighted hospitals such as UW Health, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and Froedtert Hospital as being involved in providing these treatments, according to Wisconsin Right Now.
It has been claimed that nearly 300 minors in Wisconsin have received puberty blockers or undergone hormone therapy. Additionally, the report states that more than 12 minors have undergone surgical procedures. Although specific data regarding these therapies was not provided for Froedtert Hospital, the report mentions the existence of an "Inclusion Center" at the hospital catering to minors as young as 15 years old, according to Wisconsin Right Now.
The safety and efficacy of procedures and hormone therapies for minors have not been conclusively proven. Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, for instance, has highlighted numerous risks on its website associated with these treatments. These risks include blood clots, emotional changes, heightened chances of developing high blood pressure, gallstones, a pituitary gland tumor, and other potential complications, including infertility, according to the hospital.
Reports suggest that Marshfield Clinic has taken proactive measures regarding the potential infertility risks associated with hormone therapies and similar treatments. In order to address this concern, the clinic has reportedly been collecting sperm from boys and eggs from girls as a precautionary measure, according to Wisconsin Right Now.
"'Harvesting Eggs' is not as simple as it sounds!," Twitter user CINCofTheHouse said in a tweet. "I went through years of IVF treatments & had a horribly rough time with it … I can NOT imagine a child going through that process … & oh by the way, who cryopreserves them?!!"
