MADISON, Wis. – Attorney General Josh Kaul has unveiled a new collaboration between Wisconsin and the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) aimed at enhancing consumer protections for airline passengers. The partnership focuses on addressing and resolving consumer complaints against airlines and ticket agents, with a particular emphasis on ensuring compliance with federal aviation consumer protection regulations.

Kaul emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “Airlines and ticket agents conducting business in Wisconsin must do so honestly and treat consumers fairly.” He expressed confidence that the coordinated effort between the state and federal agencies would lead to improved safeguards for U.S. airline passengers.

Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Secretary Randy Romanski echoed Kaul's sentiments, noting that the initiative would provide additional protection for Wisconsin consumers. Romanski reassured travelers that the collaborative approach between state and federal entities would be instrumental in addressing any concerns that may arise.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg commended the partnership, highlighting its significance in holding airlines and ticket agents accountable for their practices. Buttigieg stated, “By partnering with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general, the U.S. Department of Transportation has expanded our ability to protect passengers from unfair or deceptive practices.”

The memorandum of understanding between the Wisconsin Attorney General’s Office, DATCP, and the U.S. DOT outlines a structured process for handling consumer complaints against air travel companies. Under this agreement, the attorney general's office is empowered to investigate complaints and collaborate with consumers and companies to reach resolutions. Cases that require further action will be referred to the U.S. DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection for review and potential enforcement measures.

The partnership signifies a joint commitment by state and federal authorities to prioritize the rights and well-being of airline travelers. Furthermore, the U.S. DOT will provide technical support and conduct regular assessments with the attorney general’s office to ensure the effective implementation of the agreement.

The MOU, set to last for two years initially, may be extended by mutual consent between Wisconsin and the U.S. DOT. The collaboration aligns with efforts by Kaul to advocate for enhanced protections for airline passengers and reinforce consumer protection laws within the industry.

In addition to Wisconsin, various other states have entered into similar agreements with the U.S. DOT, demonstrating a collective dedication to safeguarding the interests of airline passengers nationwide.
